Dedicated educators teaching reading in a Detroit community classroom
Our story

Born from a Conversation Educators Couldn't Stop Having

Founded by a Metro-Detroit educator with over 25 years of experience — from preschool to 12th grade, high performing leaners, at-risk learners and English language learners — Literacy For All exists because the conversation demanded action.

Our Mission

"To provide every child, adult, and English language learner in the Metro-Detroit area with a safe, joyful, and effective path to literacy — building confidence, comprehension, and community along the way."

Every Learner Belongs

We meet people where they are — no judgment, no prerequisites, no shame. Every learner who walks through our door is welcomed and celebrated.

Excellence in Teaching

Our programs are grounded in evidence-based literacy instruction, refined over 30+ years of real classroom experience.

A Safe Place to Practice

For English language learners especially, confidence comes from practice. We create a supportive environment where learners can communicate freely and grow without fear.

Community Connection

Literacy opens doors to community. We help learners not just read — but understand, navigate, and feel at home in the world around them.

Why we started

Why We Started

Literacy For All grew out of an ongoing conversation — the kind that happens between educators who care deeply and can't stop thinking about the numbers. Michigan ranks 44th in the nation for literacy. For a state with so much talent and heart, that statistic kept coming up, and the question kept following it: what can we actually do to create sustainable change?

Our founder brings over 25 years of experience in metro-Detroit education — working with children from preschool through 12th grade, across the full spectrum of learners: at-risk students. high-performing students, and English language learners. Every classroom, every challenge, every breakthrough shaped a deep understanding of what learners truly need to thrive.

Working alongside English language learners made one truth undeniable: literacy is about far more than decoding words. It's about having a safe place to practice, to make mistakes, to ask questions, and to feel like you belong in the conversation. Learners don't just need instruction — they need a community where they can build confidence, grow their comprehension, and connect with the world around them.

After 25 years in classrooms and multiple educational leadership roles across Detroit, we refused to let that conversation stay theoretical. Literacy For All is the result — a nonprofit built on lived experience, designed for sustainable impact, and committed to every learner who walks through our doors.
